Google has provided many powerful tools for web masters. Some of them are Google analytics, Google sitemaps, Google alerts, Google trends.

Google analytics: Google Analytics tells you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site.

Google sitemaps: Google sitemaps helps your site to be indexed by Google easily. This tool can also be used to diagnose any problems while crawling your site.

Google alerts: Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Google Trends: Google Trends allow you to compare the searches.

In this Article we will discuss about Google sitemaps.

Sitemap is an xml file which stores the Urls of all the pages of your website. If you can create a sitemap for your website and submit to Google then all your pages will be quickly indexed. Any new pages created can also be indexed quickly by using sitemaps.

Before submitting a sitemap to Google, user has to pass authentication. I.e. he has to verify himself as the owner of the website. Google allows two methods of verification. One is placing a custom Meta tag provided by the Google to be Placed on the root page of your website. Other is adding a new html page to your website.

After verifying your site you can see the below statistics for your site

• Http errors
• Not Found Pages
• Urls Not followed
• Unreachable Urls
• Urls time Out

If you don’t have much knowledge of xml and its syntax you can even submit a simple text file containing the urls of all the pages in the web site. Single url per single page is allowed in one single line.

The advantages of using Google sitemaps are:

One can know whether his site is successfully index in Google. One can also identify the potential problems in crawling his website. One can quickly index new pages by submitting updated site maps to Google.
