In June this year, Neo from WebProWorld started a very interesting discussion on spam. Although his post mainly revolved around forum spam, he did touch a very actual topic. Spam is not only limited to one medium only, spam is a much bigger problem than most people realise. We have to deal with forum spam, search engine spam, e-mail form spam, guest book spam (for those who still use guest books on their websites), article spam (yes article syndication can also turn into annoying spam), IRC spam, blog spam, comment spam, ebook spam, affiliate network spam, mobile phone spam, and of course the infamous unsolicited junk e-mails.

Microsoft Outlook is a slightly different product from Outlook Express in terms of email management. Released in versions like Microsoft Outlook 2000 and Microsoft Outlook 2003, the Outlook email programs have had and will continue to have their share of users along with Outlook Express. Considering that spam emails are a constant threat to anyone using e-mail as a form of communication, irrespective of which email program is being used, downloading a spam blocker for Microsoft Outlook becomes all the more significant.

Controlling my own domain names puts me in an interesting position. All the spam coming into these domain names becomes my personal responsibility, and I learned early on that the default cpanel spam filters generate more than their share of false positives. Prior to getting spamwasher to guard my e-mail I had to manually create filters in outlook to deal with the majority of spam.

According to Don Evett, in his spam Statistics 2006, 40% of all email in 2006 was considered spam. Evett predicts that the amount of spam will increase 63% in 2007. Of the spam received in 2006, 19% of total spam messages (2.5 billion messages daily) were pornographic in nature.

Advertise Yes, But Do not Spam
There is a big difference between advertising and spam and it is unfortunate that a high percentage of new internet business owners do not realize the distinction between the two. This is critical because while an interesting, adequately written Internet marketing campaign can help to entice new clients and have existing clients stay with you, spam is liable to distance both new clients and existing clients. This can be exceedingly harmful to profit margins for a business owner.

The history of phishing has proven to be long and successful one. Phishers took advantage of internet users during a time when the notion of email and the internet was still new and exciting, while the notion of security was nonexistent. As naive users opened up emails from banks asking them to verify, validate, or confirm account information, never did they stop to think that the emails were fraudulent. Now, recent phishing attempts have shifted to calling customers by phone with an automated message directing the customer to provide their account information. This concept is known as "vishing".

Spam only occurs when the spammer is able to get your email address. They have a variety of methods for doing this, some legal and some not. Either way, the result is the same. You have become a spam victim. The single most important action that you can take to prevent spam from occurring is to keep your email address off of those lists. There are a number of ways that this can be accomplished, starting with never giving out your address to anyone whom you do not know or are not conducting business with.

You can recognize physical junk mail in your mailbox and quickly sort the coupons from your mortgage statement with very little effort. Bright colors, the return address, and content make it easy to do. In the same way, spam emails tend to be similar to each other in their offerings, format, and overall arrangement. Email filters were designed to do the same scanning and sorting for your inbox, leaving you out of the process.
