So it's happened. Twitter has gone mainstream. As Twitter users, we knew instantly when Mumbai came under terrorist attack. We laughed at the photo of Stephen Fry stuck in an elevator when he tweeted his predicament, we were there when Ashton Kutcher beat CNN to 1 million followers, we caught the first glimpse of passengers being evacuated from the ditched plane on the Hudson River and we all suffered the lag time when Oprah Winfrey sent her first ever tweet on live TV.

Twitter, the popular microblogging website has been in news for more reasons than one. And with the new features and tools that it has been coming up with, it is only gaining more popularity on the social media landscape. In fact, the recent announcements by Microsoft Bing and Google about their decision to include Twitter updates in their search results has only increased its relevance. All this just reinstates the fact that if you want to realize the full potential of your web presence, it is no longer sensible to ignore Twitter.

Twitter is a micro-blogging site that asks you a basic question, "What are you doing?" It allows anyone with an account to write up to 140 characters in a text field as a means to update, comment, promote or communicate to others who are "following" you. When people follow you, they see what you've recently contributed when they login. They see your "tweets", which are the messages you leave.
