I quickly learned that writing articles and submitting them to online publications was a great way to attract new readers and gain experience as a freelance writer.

I have been fortunate to have several of my articles published on high trafficked websites and have made some wonderful new friends as a result of submitting my articles to these free ezines.

Here are seven tips to make article directories work for you.

1. Decide What to Write About

You're going to want to decide what to write about. What are people discussing in the news? You may wish to subscribe to wordtracker.com which will give you a report of the most searched for phrases. The Wordtracker keyword report is published each Tuesday and distributed to over 30,000 subscribers. Be sure to choose a hot topic.

2. Create Your Resource Box

Your resource box gives permission for the publisher to publish your article in exchange for a byline at the end of the article. The byline is about four lines of text about yourself, including a link to your website or blog.

3. Create a Catchy Title

Chose a subject title that will make people want to read your article. The secret is to capture your audience's attention.

4. Decide on the Number of Words

Decide on the number of words that you're going to use for your article. A word count between 450-600 words is a good number for ezines.

5. Edit your Article

Give yourself plenty of time to write the article. Before submitting the completed article, make sure that you've edit it for grammatical and spelling errors. You may want to have someone else go over your article for errors before submission.

6. Write a Key Word Rich Article

If you wish to maximize your results, write a key word rich article. inventory.overture.com offers a popular keyword suggestion tool that shows you the most common searched for words.

7. Submit your Article

Whenever I write an article, I first publish it on my own website and then I submit it to ezines. I have gone ahead and created a list of the top ten directories to submit your articles to.
