Survival Guide For Web Designers In Recession Times

Author: Maneet Puri

The grim economic environment has taken toll on almost all the industries, and website design and development is no exception. And the subsequent recession period has not been very good for web designers either.

Here are some tips for website designers to survive through the recession period.

Do Good Work

There is no escaping this, be it recession or otherwise. A web designer is known for the website design. If you do good work, potential clients will notice you and do business with you. And if your designs are not good enough, there will obviously be no buyers. This becomes especially important in recession times. This is because clients only want the best of services. Everything mediocre is not tolerable.

Charge a Fair Price

While it is important for you to mint money with your website design business, recession period is not the best of times to go overboard with your demands. This is because, in times of credit crunch clients seek the services at the cheapest possible rates. So if there is someone else who provides the same quality of designs at lower prices, you stand to lose business. Therefore, always charge a fair price for your works and

Lower Your Overhead Costs

Bad economic times wreck havoc on big companies and organizations. However, it is kinder to the small businesses and freelancers. This is because of their cheaper costs and flexibility to adjust to client demands. However, recession is not a good time to go overboard with your costs. You should definitely seek to cut your overhead costs if your want to keep healthy profit margin. If you don't think you can make a one-person company, then seek online help from other freelancers and their virtual services. You can save a lot of overhead costs like payroll and employee costs etc.

Communicate with Clients

Website design business is all about networking. If there is no business coming naturally, get moving and make some business. Contact former clients through emails. But remember, your mails should not be a plea for work. Rather use a casual tone. Wish them seasons' greetings, enquire how they are doing and inform them about your business. Make your email signature work for you by making I speak for your business.

Inform them about your range of services and how they can benefit their business. The rule of selling remains the same, 'Tell not what the product has, but tell them what they can have' Praising your services is easy but what will work is when you tell them how it will benefit them.

Don't hesitate to promote yourself. But don't boast. Tell people about your abilities but also provide examples to support the claim.

Wait for Some Time

Securing business is not easy during the recession times. Therefore, even after your marketing and promotion efforts don’t be surprised if you don't get enough business. You just need to give it some time before clients start pouring in. this is because clients can get extremely choosy during recession periods. But they will eventually need your services.
