Thanks Rose...you can see how far out of my depth I am when I can't even use the forum to get help without help!

Yesterday evening this computer flashed a "new network detected" message. There's no network, except the LAN for the DSL modem, and none showing in either network places or network settings. However, McAfee says (in Manage Networks) that this computer is connected to a network that's not trusted.

In the banned/trusted IP listing, it lists a modification date of yesterday and shows a whole range of IPs in the "approved" listing (all as one entry) Maybe just SBC updating IPs? Afraid to assume so...and in the IP config the Connection Specific DNS Suffix says domain_not_set.invalid

Hello TLSanders Smile

Welcome to Invision-Graphics.com!

Well it took you awhile but your here! First I need to know a few things before we proceed - what windows version is she using

Win XP, Me, 98se etc...

Second thing, did she install any printers, any USB devices etc...

Has she added any software or downloaded anything in the last couple of days? Or has she installed any firewalls...

Ok perfect, Windows XP definetly makes it much easier....

Ok so nothing installed or added, so when did this new network get detected and what does it say when you right click on the new network and select properties?

Have you tried doing a system restore yet?

Well, the problem is that I can't FIND the network to learn anything about it. My mom got the message and clicked not to trust it last night. (Which matches the date McAfee says it was modified) When I go to network places/settings, I don't see anything except the LAN for the modem.

I have not done a system restore--should I?

Yes definetly, do a system restore -- she wont loose any files or anything but if any configuration was modified it will go back to what it was ...

So try that now and report back!

Its not a problem as I am online all the time as I run 4 servers with web clients, so I sorta need to be online to answer their questions as well!

Okay, system restore done. I set it back to June 25, but it doesn't seem to have changed anything (McAfee still lists the 6/29 modification) I also got a Registry Change notice about something called MyWebSearch which we're not using on purpose--I'm assuming I want to block that?

Definetly MyWebSearch is Spyware and probably the problem!

Go into the control panel and uninstall it and then check the program folders to ensure its gone and not in there either...

So go ... Start -> Control Panel -> Add & Remove Programs and uninstall MyWebSearch and anything related to it!

Okay, removed and rebooted; it's gone (should I be worried about what it might have been doing while it was here?)

While checking program files I noticed that several (IE, Windows media player, Outlook Express and something called LX_Cats) are showing modifications on 6/30--that's probably something I did with the system restore, but thought I should mention it just in case.

I beleive that should take care of it, the system restore is probably the IE and other aps you mentioned nothing to worry about there!

As far as MyWebSearch -- its removed and gone thats the good thing, it works as a proxy server and reports back to their system tracking her every move on the internet so that they can gear pop-up ads and other related media at her hoping she clicks or buys what their selling!

But she did the right thing by denying them access, which probably prevented her from getting more spyware!

Thank you so much! I will definitely be telling anyone who might be interested what great support you offer, and will take some time to browse around and learn more about what you do on the paid side of the business; hopefully the next time I need your help it will be over there!
