Just have someone trace your arm onto some drawling paper. That's what the tattoo artists do so they know how much room they have to work with.

Here's what I did to lay out my sleeve.I took measurements all the way down my arm then laid it out on paper. Measure from inside to back side of your shoulder, length of shoulder (top to base of shoulder muscle), length of shoulder to wrist, circumference of bicep, elbow, forearm and wrist. With these measurements you should be able to lay out a kind of map of your arm. Then start filling it in!The only thing you want to pay attention to is the fact that the paper is flat and your arm is not, so it gives the illusion of having more space than you really do. But your tattooist will have to redraw it and can help you with what works and what doesn't. Having that "road map" to your sleeve really helps give the artist a clear picture of what you want.

Template? You mean the standard one size fits all template? No such thing. Everyone's body is different just like everyone's arm is different. In size, in structure... Sleeves are set up by your artist so they have flow and movement. So everything fits well. Figure out what it is that you want, and then go discuss with your artist. Having a tattoo artist draw up your design is a good way to judge whether or not you want to work with them. If your artist can't draw up what you want, that's a pretty good indicator that they're not cut out for the job. Paper is ultimately easier to work with than skin. If they cant' do it on paper, why trust them with your skin? This is why it's important to portfolio shop. The best design in the hands of a mediocre artist will be, at best, mediocre. So the artist is just as important as the piece.
